As creators and, in general, humans, it takes a significant portion of our energy to forget old thoughts and ideas. These may be disturbing past incidents or self-induced statements that you try hard to get away from.
For artists, these may be old thoughts that take up space in their minds and prevent them from having newer, higher-grade thoughts that hold value in creativity.
In today’s post, I will uncover ten practical steps you can follow to get away from disturbing thoughts that have held you back for ages, helping you perform to your maximum potential in your field of creativity and productivity.
Welcome to The Mindset: The Ultimate Mental Growth Model.

Firstly, we need to understand the simple fact that giving attention and significance to any kind of thought (positive, negative, disturbing, uplifting, depressing, or any other kind) will biologically and scientifically strengthen the neural circuits that make up those thoughts.
Check out my post where I dive deeper into this topic:
Now, let’s get into the ten actionable steps to help you get away from thoughts that might have held you back from reaching your potential.
1. Review even older thoughts and ideas. Realize and embrace the fact that thoughts come and go. Realize it’s a “change” that has happened to you and you can change from this too.
2. Understand that no situation is permanent. If you cannot get rid of old thoughts, stop believing you cannot get rid of old thoughts. You can change the way you think and feel on demand once you understand you are the one who is aware of the thoughts you get, and you are not the thoughts themselves.
3. Don’t notice their existence. The moment you notice is when you acknowledge the fact that they are sticking to you. This is exactly what you want to get away from. Don’t notice their existence, and they will vanish before you remember to notice them the next time.
4. Regain and embrace the amateur mindset. You are not better or worse than anyone. You are just better or worse than your past self. What happened is change, and what you want too, is change.
Be open to new ideas and don’t hesitate to do things you have never done before to get out of your current thought processes.
You have to do the things you have never done to get the things you’ve never had.
5. Go for a long walk. Five minutes is not enough. It is the best way to obtain a direct connection with abundance and the higher source.
Be open to your surroundings and people around you when you are walking. You might see that person who could change your life and help you get out of lifelong addictions to negative and destructive thought processes.
6. Disconnect yourself from the world and go for a trip alone. New places and new people will surely excite new thoughts inside you. Just don’t suppress the new thoughts. Welcome them with gratitude and acknowledge them with love.
7. Let thoughts come. Let thoughts go. Don’t try to hold them in place or push them away with brute force. Thoughts that emerge from feelings, when given attention and significance, grow over time, making it harder and harder to get out of them, which is exactly what you don’t want. So, stop interacting with your thoughts.
8. Meditate. It’s not about what you think. It’s about knowing how to not think. It’s about giving space for new thoughts to naturally surface through non-thinking. Once you master non-thinking, getting fresh new thoughts will be just a matter of time and patience.
9. Trust the process. It is guaranteed that you will not get the desired results if you just do the steps for one week.
Taking a long time to get worthy things is called worthwhile. Trust yourself and your gut feeling. You wanted to get away from negative, destructive thoughts, and you didn’t want to stay there once again. That’s why you are reading this post right now. Consistency is king.
10. Seek professional help if needed. After all possible attempts, if you are still suffering from old thoughts holding you back from excellence, proper therapy, and medical support are recommended over anything else.
If small things could help you, I recommend reading these posts to gain better knowledge of your mind and control destructive thought processes.
